Exploring Literacy
As an up-and-coming English Language Arts teacher, I would like to showcase my exploration of three very important questions related to literacy:
Join me as I explore this throughout my second practical semester (and beyond). Read on for research, my own personal experiences, resources and more!
Also, as I collect things that I think would make great literacy lessons, check back to my resources page to find some fun things! If you have something you would like to suggest, offer it on my exploring literacy forum!
- What are the complexities involved in becoming literate in the 21st century?
- What are the complexities involved in reading - both traditional and multimodal texts?
- What are the complexities involved in writing - both traditional and mulltimodal texts?

Reflections on building this portion of my website ...
One of the things I enjoyed about creating this resource is that it was dedicated time towards finding things that I may not have otherwise found. I wanted to make this a resource that contained things that other English teachers might not have found; in other words, things that you might not find first thing in a Google or Pinterest search. For that reason I was quite selective. I hope that this shows as I continue to develop this resource.
A lot of the development of this website came before I began this project. The theme I have chosen represents myself as an individual - I love plants and gardening - and myself as a teacher - someone who wants to promote intellectual and personal growth.
During my time in PSII, I added all the information below about my reading habits just as an interesting tidbit for anyone who comes across my site to check out - who knows, maybe they'll find their next favorite book! In addition, anything on my Teaching Literacy Resources page was found as part of this semester's work. What does not appear on this website but which was a part of my research throughout the course of this semester is a selection of Pinterest boards I keep adding to that have to do with teaching and learning literacy. You can find them here and here. I strongly encourage you to check these out as well! Finally, I spent a lot of time considering the answers to the above questions. I approached these questions as a sort of way to break down, in depth, my teaching philosophy as it specifically applies to literacy. As I am early in my career, I'm sure my answers to those questions will evolve and change, but please do feel free to have a read!
The direction I would like to take moving forward is one where I look specifically for resources which are either easy to differentiate or which are in and of themselves differentiated modes of learning for exceptional learners. This will be done alongside my inclusive education studies which I will be pursuing in depth for the next year and a half after PSII is complete.

My Reading Habits...
If you haven't discovered Goodreads yet, go do so. Now. It is an awesome way to connect with your fellow readers, keep track of what you've read, and discover lots of new literature! It also has the potential to act as a collaborative tracker for a school year reading challenge, and help your young readers find books they'll like!
Every year, I set a challenge to read a set number of books throughout the year. Check out my progress here -- I haven't missed a challenge yet! |
